Lesson Topic/Subject: Making a dinosaur fossil
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Teacher of Lesson: Emily Maki
Approximate Time: 30 minutes

Objectives:

  1. Students will learn that dinosaur bones need to be pieced together.
  2. Students will learn that there are different sized bones for different parts of the body.
  3. Students will learn that dinosaur names are based on their characteristics.

Materials:

  1. Tongue depressors
  2. Toothpicks
  3. Construction paper
  4. Glue
  5. Dinosaur Time, Parish

Procedures:

  1. Have toothpicks and tongue depressors passed out on each table.
  2. Have children congregate on rug. Read Dinosaur Time . Emphasize the different aspects of the dinosaurs (big, small, teeth, no teeth, tails aspects, legs aspects, horns).
  3. Discuss that they are going to be the paleontologists and put together dinosaur bones to create their own dinosaurs.
  4. Discuss with children that there are different sized materials (toothpicks and tongue depressors) for different sized bones.
  5. Show the children my example. Show them how different size bones are illustrated by different materials in the examples. Discuss the different aspects of different dinosaurs seen in the book as seen on my dinosaur.
  6. Let the children pick out the color of paper for their background.
  7. Have the children begin their exploration of the various bones as they glue onto their paper.
  8. Have the children name their dinosaur according to characteristics of their dinosaur.

Evaluation of student learning:

  1. Students, upon questioning, will be able to talk about the different characteristics of the dinosaurs.
  2. Students will create their own dinosaur bone picture using appropriate size and shape pieces.
  3. Students will successfully label their dinosaurs with a name that connects with the characteristics of their dinosaur.
