Lesson-Topic: Hand tracing turkey
Grade Level: Kindergarten - November 12, 1997

Approximate Time: 30 minutes

Objectives:

1. Students will sit and listen to 1,2,3 Thanksgiving.
2. Students will participate in story discussion, respect their peers and will raise their hand when they want to contribute.
3. Students will begin to understand what Thanksgiving is all about and will be able to think of things which associate with Thanksgiving.
4. Students will demonstrate fine and large motor skills, eye-hand coordination and knowledge of colors.

Materials:

1. 1,2,3 Thanksgiving by Lisa W. Nikola
2. crayons
3. 30 pieces of white construction paper.
4. scissors

Procedure:

1. Remind students of proper behavior during story, wiggle song.
2. Ask students what holiday is coming up in the next couple weeks.
3. What do we eat on Thanksgiving, what types of food?
4. What sounds do turkeys make?
   -Gobble gobble.
5. Do they have eyes, nose and a mouth just like ours? Who knows what we call a turkey's nose?
   -beak.
6. We are going to read the story 1,2,3 Thanksgiving and say numbers outloud that go along with the story.
7. Show students cover of book. Raise your hand and tell me what you think this book will be about. Call on two to three students to share. Explain that not everybody is going to have a turn but I will choose boys and girls who are sitting quietly, with their hands in their lap and I see their eyes up at me.
8. Begin reading and for each page, have children start at one and count out loud while showing pictures.
   - make sure all students are counting out loud by rote.
9. Stop at page with animals. Raise hand and tell me one animal you see in the picture.
10. When finished with story ask-What is one thing you can tell me about the story that you remember?
11. Practice counting up to 10 out loud with fingers. Practice counting down from 10 out loud with fingers.
12. Explain hand turkey- show children on paper in front of room.
    1. Lay hand flat on paper, trace it with a crayon.
    2. Make feathers on back using different colors- make patterns ex. red, blue purple, red, blue, purple. Color in finger traces on paper, those will be the turkeyís feathers.
    3. Draw nose-beak, eye and a little mouth for our turkey.
    4. Ask: What kinds of nose do turkeys have- are they just like ours? Why?
    5. Color in body of turkey brown so we can see that it's a turkey.
    6. Add one or two wings on body or backward threes it should look like this-
    7. Draw dribble under beak which looks like a shrivel under their mouth.
13. After turkey is all drawn in with various colors, create background, Ask - Where is your turkey, Draw what you think he is doing? Draw trees or sky on board.
14. When hand turkeys are finished have them cut out or leave on paper. Hang up around the room.
15. Call children one at a time to go and sit by tables and begin turkey hands. Walk around and observe progress.

Evaluation:

1. Are the children listening to and following directions?
2. Did they know their numbers and were saying them out loud with the class during the story?
3. Did they contribute verbally and understand a little of what Thanksgiving is all about. Who was involved, simple steps of story.
4. Were my students able to make associations between Thanksgiving and their previous knowledge on the holiday.
5. Were they using fine, large motor skills and eye-hand coordination during tracing of hand and coloring in of turkey?

Follow-Up Activity:

We are going to talk about different parts of a turkey and have children use hand turkey to point out body parts. Read Thanksgiving story and discuss why Pilgrims and Indians ate turkey for Thanksgiving.
