Syllabus


Class of 41 Assistant Teachers meets in Ed 16 Fridays 12:30-1:30.

Collaborators: James Levin, Michael Waugh, Cathy Thurston, Karl Koenke, Matt Stuve, Evangeline Secaras, Shwu-yi Leu

Assistant Teachers work in pairs on Macintosh PowerBooks issued by the Office of Educational Technology.


Objectives:

To know enough about a computer so that it is a welcome electronic tool.

To know about and use word processing, spread sheets and data
base.
To know about and use Internet and WWW to locate resources, etc.
To know about and be able to obtain Shareware and Freeware.
To know about and be able to use ListServs and NewsGroups.
To communicate via e-mail with colleagues.

To use the computer in the elementary classroom.

To gain knowledge of software availability and selection.
To gain knowledge of managing a one computer classroom.
Fall Semester, 1996- 1997 Academic Year
Sept. 6 Calendar:
Distributed Powerbooks, introduced connecting to internet from home.
Sept. 13 Helps students with hardware/software problems, revisited connecting from home, showed how to use Eudora.
Sept. 20 A thorough explanation of Eudora was provided.
Works intro thru specifics
Assignment: Due Sept. 25. Complete the survey of computers in classrooms. Assignment was sent via e-mail and is to be returned to Karl Koenke via e-mail.
Provided: one disk to copy Eudora folder for use in classrooms or at home.
Sept. 27 Netscape--how to use
Oct. 4 Microsoft Works:
Tutorial for Works 4.0, Wizards, intro to database
Oct. 11 Discuss reactions to Sharon Roth.
Survey for small group learning activities and second semester.
Work with Web sites and finding material for miniunit.
Oct. 18 Jim and Cathy are gone. Provided urls for 96-97 YLP and CU Curriculum guides.
Oct. 25 Pictures, MultiMedia, Creating personal Web Pages.
Plan Vanna speak on choices and problems of putting pictures on the WEB, Matt Stuve will provide background for personal WEB PAGE, Kathy will do an overview of Encarta. Class in thirds: pictures, making a Web Page, and previewing multimedia.

Jan. 24 CHECK OUT THE POWERBOOKS, fixing any problems, Cathy Thurston asks for Open House Volunteers, Karl and Shwu-yi show the Technology Standards on the Web.
Jan. 31 Tutorials/trouble shooting / powerbooks and software are okay. Cathy Thurston: Overview of new multimedia programs. Karl, Venna, and Shwu-yi: Application of Technology Standards. Matt and Gary: Personal Web Pages.
