Apply Online

New UIUC Graduate Students: Complete the Graduate College Application

All applications for admission are submitted to the Graduate College. The Graduate College Application is also the application for financial aid.

  • Submit completed petition, along with the name of the department in which you are currently admitted, and the names of the current department head and your most recent advisor. Do not submit directly to the Graduate College.
  • Submit all materials to EOL, 333 Education Building, 1310 S. 6th St. MC-708, Champaign, IL 61820, by the admissions deadline. Materials may be dropped off in person or faxed to 217.244.3378.
Former UIUC Graduate Students:

The ApplyYourself Process

  • Click the “Apply” button above, this will take you to the Graduate College Website
  • Click "Apply to Graduate School" under the "Prospective Students" heading
  • Please carefully read the instructions on the Graduate College Web site
  • Click “Domestic Applicants” (International Applicants see International Applicant Procedures)
  • Read Instructions
  • Click “Apply Now” This will take you to the login page of the "ApplyYourself™" system
  • Be sure you turn off any pop-up blockers that you may have running before beginning the ApplyYourself™ application.
  • If you’ve already started an application, login using your ApplyYourself PIN and Password.
  • If you are a New applicant, Click “Create Account” on right bar of page
  • Fill out ‘Applicant Account Profile’ and click “Create Account”
  • You should instantly receive an email (two emails if you’ve elected to receive your password) with your PIN and password information
  • If you want to continue applying right now, hit “Login” [If you want to continue at a later time make note of your PIN and password and return to: www.grad.uiuc.edu/admissions/apply/]
  • Continuing with the application…Agree to the terms (Check “I agree” checkbox) and click “Continue and Create New Account”
  • Click the “Application for Admission” link
  • Fill out each of the ‘Application for Admission’ information sections on the left bar of the page [Personal Information, Contact Information, Application Information, Educational History, Languages, Test Information (Not Applicable for this program unless you’re an international applicant), Statements]
  • Select "Educational Organization & Leadership" from the "Proposed Program" drop-down menu
  • Select "Educational Organization & Leadership (online) EDMU" from the "Degree" drop-down menu. **Note The degree may read EDM instead of EDMU. Either is fine as long as the degree says "(Online)"
  • Type "Educational Leadership & Policies" in the "Field(s) of Specialization" box. This is a key step in making sure you apply to the correct program.
  • Remember to save each section of the application as you go along. Click either “save” or “save and continue” depending on whether you’re going to keep going or come back later.
  • Most sections of the application are click-to select-forms or simple fill-in-the-blank items. The ‘Statements’ section allows you to upload other required documents.
  • Click the appropriate “Upload Document” button to add your 1) resume and 2) personal statement.  A new dialog box will open with instructions on what types of documents are acceptable how to upload them. Use the dialog box’s ‘Browse’ button to find your document on your computer and its ‘upload document’ button to insert it into your application.
  • Click “Close Window”
  • Once the required documents are uploaded, click “Save & Proceed to Submission”
  • Once satisfied with the application sections, click “Recommendations” There are complete instructions on how to add recommenders to your application.
  • “Downloadable Forms” takes you to links for forms if 1) any of your recommenders will submit a letter of reference offline, or 2) if you’re an international applicant
  • Click “Print Application” A new dialog box opens, click “print”
  • If all fields are filled out, click “Submit”
  • Make credit card payment

Prepare and Submit Supporting Application Materials

Domestic Applicants

  • Personal Statement (doc) - A statement in which you provide evidence of how your professional experiences and prior academic work have focused your thinking toward the planned program of study.
  • 3 Letters of Reference (pdf) - From persons who have direct knowledge of your academic and/or professional performance and potential for graduate study. If the recommenders complete this online, no additional copy is necessary.
  • Transcripts - Submit official transcripts from every college/university you have attended, both undergrad or graduate, in a sealed envelope, with a certification stamp across the seal. "Issued to Student" copies are not considered official by the Graduate College. All transcripts must be sent directly to the Educational Organization and Leadership Department (333 Education Building  MC-708, 1310 S. Sixth St., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, IL 61820). IMPORTANT: Even if you have course work from the University of Illinois, we still need your official transcript mailed to us. Please contact the Office of Admissions and Records if you desire additional information.
  • Current Professional Resume (Curriculum Vitae) - Please use the space provided by the only application to upload this document.

International Applicants Only
(in addition to the materials detailed above)

  • TOEFL Score - Most international applicants must submit an official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score report for an exam taken within 2 years of date of requested admission. The TOEFL requirement may be waived for international applicants who have received a graduate degree from an English speaking university, or who have been enrolled full-time at an English speaking university for two of the last five years. The department requires a minimum TOEFL score of 620 on the paper version of test (pbt); minimum score of 260 on the computer version of test (cbt) and minimum score of 105 on the Internet based test (ibt).

Admission Criteria

The Educational Organization and Leadership Department considers the following as criteria for admission to degree programs

  • Quality of undergraduate work (a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the last 60 hours of undergraduate course work)
  • Quality of graduate work
  • Quality of recommendations contained in three letters of reference
  • Relevance of work experience and career goals
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL), for applicants from non-English speaking countries. See acceptable scoring above.
