Academic Programs

EOL offers program specialization in the areas of Educational Administration and Leadership and Higher Education Administration. Students applying to the EOL Department must specify the area of specialization that will become the focus of their program.

Educational Administration and Leadership

The Educational Administration and Leadership Program offers graduate programs which embrace the broad array of administrative and supervisory positions in education. Educational leadership and organizational theory and practice are emphasized in the program. Specialized study provides preparation for educational career positions such as: superintendent, elementary or secondary school principal, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction or staff and pupil personnel, and policy analyst for the state and national governmental bodies. Advanced graduate study emphasizes development of scholarship and research competence, extended knowledge of psychological, historical, and philosophical foundations of education, and study in related academic disciplines. Admission to cohort groups where students take course work during intensive weekends while continuing their employment is common at both the superintendent and building principal level.

The Educational Administration and Leadership Program offers a variety of graduate degrees including a Master of Education (Ed.M.) with General Administrative Endorsement(Type 75), Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) with General Administrative Endorsement(Type 75), Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) with Superintendent Administrative Endorsement, Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) with Superintendent Endorsement, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) with Superintendent Endorsement.

Higher Education

The Higher Education Program offers graduate programs to provide academic preparation and professional development to graduate students who presently hold or seek careers in college and university administration and leadership, policy development, and scholarly research. Program priorities include integrating theory and practice, maintaining strong interdisciplinary areas of study, fostering high quality research, and enhancing leadership development. The Higher Education Program also seeks to promote academic integrity in the field of study and to provide college and university administrators, policy makers, and faculty with practical research and professional development in the State of Illinois and throughout the United States.

Graduate students entering the program enroll in a wide range of graduate level degrees in Higher Education Administration and Policy including a Master of Education (Ed.M.), Master of Science (M.S.), Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS), Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

Educational Leadership and Policy (online)

This Master of Education degree in Educational Organization and Leadership (EOL) represents an opportunity to build upon the shared expertise of EOL faculty across our two program areas of Higher Education (HE) and Educational Administration and Leadership (EAL). This program strives to develop primary, secondary, and post secondary educational leaders, administrators, and policy analysts who seek to understand and address critical P-12 and higher education issues. Students will study different educational leadership and policy practices and theories with particular focus paid to educational access, equity, and excellence. Students in this program will have the opportunity to specialize in P-12 leadership and policy or in higher education and policy. This program targets a national and international audience interested in P-12 teacher and educational leadership, higher education, and P-20 educational policy. The program does not provide administrative licensure.

Community College Executive Leadership (CCEL)

The CCEL program is for current community college administrators and faculty leaders who aspire to executive leadership positions as presidents, vice presidents, and deans in public community colleges. CCEL involves course work over approximately three years, plus a dissertation. The selected participants will enter this graduate option as a cohort and continue through the course work as a group.

The CCEL option results in the awarding of the degree Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) which is designed to provide students with advanced professional training and to develop expertise in the scholarly study of professional issues.

A distinguishing feature of CCEL is that students can remain employed full-time while pursuing the Ed.D. degree since this option encourages the continuous engagement of practice with theory and research. For students who wish to commit to full-time study, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) option is available.

The College of Education has engaged in graduate education for community college personnel for many years. Since 1998 three CCEL cohorts have enrolled approximately 50 doctoral students. Graduates have been placed successfully in administrative positions as president, vice president, dean, director, and department chair in Illinois and nationally.
