Career Exploration for Special Education Students -- Conclusions

The project was a catalyst for many things. First of all, the project introduced school district administrators to the Internet and how it could be used for classroom projects. Because of this, the school district purchased an IBM compatible 486 for the teacher's classroom. This enabled the students to use other applications such as the World Wide Web and Eudora. As well as use the information gained from this course to develop an acceptable use policy for the district.

Some staff, because of learning about the Internet, have signed up for an account with ISBE. The school district plans on training some teachers this summer on how to use the Internet in education.

The students, because of the newer computer, were able to learn Windows. Many students found this easier to operate. The students also learned about modems and modem speeds.

The career project was interesting for some students, however, it had some flaws. First of all, because of only having one computer, only one student at a time could write a letter. This cause a lot of down time in the class. Secondly, because the emailing back and forth took so long the students and teacher lost the focus of the project by the end of it. The students did not synthesize the different careers. Also, because the students were learning disabled, most of the careers were not something the students would choose as a career. Most of the careers were out of their reach or they never had heard of the careers.

Improvements could easily be made to the project. The students could have a working knowledge of how to use the computer and let the 'newness' of it wear off. Thus the teacher and students could focus on the subject matter being taught rather than the medium used to teach it. Secondly, additional computers hooked up on a network would aid in speeding up the project. Finally, having careers that the students are interested in would help.
