April Noon Project -- Introduction

The April Noon Project is a re-creation of the experiment conducted by the Greek mathematician Erastosthenes in which he successfully estimated the circumference of the earth and literally changed the world. Sites from all across the globe have participated in this event over the past several years and students world wide have found that science and mathematics have a fundamental use in their lives.

This particular project was announced through a National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) flyer and was posted on the world web homepage of NCTM. Interested participants were to contact Kathleen Smith or send a message to the reflector address, noonctm@lynx.ed.uiuc.edu. Ms. Smith forwarded their requests to the coordinator prior to the initialization of the reflector, April 6, 1995.
